Five elements in BaZi: counts are not strength
Understand Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, generation and control cycles, and the limits of percentage charts.
Five phases of a traditional model
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are commonly called the five elements, or Wu Xing. They are better understood here as interacting categories in a traditional model than as literal substances inside a person. Each stem and branch is associated with an element.
Generation and control
The generation cycle is Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. The control cycle is Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. These describe relationships within the model. “Control” is not automatically harmful, and “generation” is not automatically beneficial.
How our percentage bars are calculated
Each visible stem and branch gets one count. With a known hour there are eight characters, so one contributes 12.5%. With an unknown hour there are six. We do not add hidden stems to these bars or weight them by season. The result is composition, not element strength.
Missing does not mean defective
Zero visible Fire does not prove that a person needs more Fire, lacks passion or should make a specific purchase. Hidden stems may contain Fire, and traditional strength analysis considers other factors. A balanced-looking chart is not a promise of a balanced life.
